DRAA is a non-profit community service organisation established to provide retirement accommodation for residents within the Darlington district over the age of 60.
Priority is given to people who have limited means and need accommodation at lower than market cost, while wanting to maintain their existing community and social relationships within Darlington and may need the companionship and support that a small retirement community can provide.

Darlington Glen Retirement Village currently consists of five free standing independent living villas in Pine Terrace, Darlington, near to the Village facilities and public transport.
The Glen is in part a resident-funded project, subject to the terms of the Retirement Villages Act 1998.

Residents provide DRAA with an interest-free loan for the term of their occupancy, considerably less than market value. Residents also pay operating costs fortnightly to cover such items as rates and charges, building maintenance and building insurance.
The loan, less a sum determined by the length of occupancy, is repaid when the villa is released.
The DRAA committee meets every two months with a resident representative as part of the committee. It holds an Annual General Meeting.

At the end of October, five members of Soroptimist International of Helena attended the Bollywood Ball in aid of the Soroptimist International Quadrennial Project 2007-2011, Project Sierra. It was an excellent evening. Most people attending dressed up in Indian attire. There was a buffet of different curries, followed by Bollywood type dancing which most people got up and tried to do. It was a very colourful and entertaining evening.

In the middle of November, Gary Warden presented an Information evening on Climate change at the Hillview golf course. It was a very interesting evening, with Gary presenting lots of information. Gary showed us ways of saving on fuel bills, using energy efficient appliances and reducing our carbon footprint. With the end of the year coming up our club has conducted a planning meeting to decide our direction next year and to ensure we are working within the  Soroptimist International Program area objectives.

In December we will be having our Christmas function. Before taking a break till next year, with the AGM of the club in January.
I would like to wish all readers a safe and happy festive season.

We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at the Foothills Learning centre, Edney Road, High Wycombe. At 7pm.

The Darlington Club

Contact:Chris Pemberton
Telephone: 9252 0154

The Darlington Club was formed in June 2004 after a well-attended public meeting, convened by Darlington Residents and Ratepayers Association (DRRA), overwhelming endorsed the concept.

The idea arose because of Darlington’s lack of a focal meeting point where residents could get together and newcomers to the area meet others from the local community. A comparison was drawn with the role of the traditional English village pub.

Starting with a small group of enthusiasts, club membership has grown to approximately 140. Membership is limited to residents of Darlington or those with a close affiliation to the suburb. A formal constitution has been adopted. In November 2005, following negotiations with Mundaring Shire, the club moved into its current headquarters in the Darlington Lesser Hall. The area has been attractively furnished and is available for use by other groups when not required by the club.

The club’s objectives are:

  • To provide the means and facilities for Darlington residents to meet;
  • To encourage friendships through the medium of social and community activities;
  • To promote the well-being of the community of Darlington;

The club meets every Friday evening from 6.00pm – 9.00pm. Members and guests bring their own refreshments. Once a month a local music group provide entertainment until midnight.
As well as these regular weekly ‘sundowners’ the club arranges a wide variety of other social events, including dinners, wine tasting, BBQs, games nights, an annual Christmas party (complete with Santa), New Year’s Eve party, and many more. For the past three years we have run the wine tent at the annual Darlington Arts Festival.
The club encourages family participation. Children (appropriately supervised) are welcome at most events.
A diary of social events appears each month in the Darlington Review.

The club is managed by a committee of volunteers, elected on an annual basis. Current members are:

Michael Jones (President)
Ian Scrimshaw (Vice-President)
Chris Pemberton (Secretary)
Cliff Burns (Treasurer)
Glen Whisson
Carolyn Staveley
Teresa Tierney
Margaret McCarthy
Edwina Carter
Ken Rich

Anyone interested in finding out more about the Club is very welcome to drop in to one of the Friday evening sundowners, or contact the club secretary, Chris Pemberton, on 9252 0154.

DARLINGTON UNITED CHURCH

It hardly seems possible that Christmas is almost upon us again and that it is time to write for the December issue of the Review.

To all the readers, our church community wishes you a very happy and blessed Christmas and trust that you are able to spend some time reflecting about why we celebrate at Christmas time each year. Of course, it is to remember the coming of Jesus into this world but what relevance does His coming and subsequent life and death have to do with us living some 2000 years after His birth in an obscure village in Judea? The Bible, God's Word for humanity for any age, reveals that this baby boy was no ordinary child … He would be called '…Emmanuel-which means, "God with us" ' (Matthew 1:23) and He would be '…the Son of God' (Luke 1:35). The purpose of His coming would be to die as a sacrifice for our sins, so that God's penalty could be paid for us and in our place. This is the good news of Christmas, that God's Son, '…made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross' (Philippians 2:7-8). You see because of God's love for us, He used the coming of Jesus and His subsequent death to provide the way for us to come back into a proper relationship with Him, after this relationship had been fractured by our disobedience and selfishness, our sin. And this process all began in that manger in Bethlehem on that first Christmas morning. This is the good news that we celebrate at Christmas. We are no longer alone – God has entered into this world to make Himself known to us and to demonstrate how precious we are to Him. If you want to know more, give me a call over this Christmas period or come to our services on Christmas Sunday (21/12) or on Christmas Day, both at 9.30 am.

As we face a new year with great uncertainty on the world scene, why not invest some of your time in looking at the life and claims of Jesus who said 'Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.' This is what we need as we face 2009!
