Home to some 3500 residents, Darlington is one of the original villages in the Darling Range, coming into being after the government of the Swan River Colony opened the Eastern Railway in the 1880s.  Title to the land destined to become a vineyard that covered what is now the heart of the village was secured in 1883.  Today, part of the village hall reminds residents of the first successful vineyard which put Darlington on the map and encouraged others to settle in the area, building weekenders, orchards and guesthouses (see History).

The village is part of the South Ward of Mundaring Shire and is served by three locally elected Shire Councillors. (see Key People).

The Anglican Church hall at left (above) is a new addition in sympathy with the stonework of the original village church on the right.

One of the oldest buildings in Darlington is the original wine cellar (below left) which is now part of an extended building comprising the Darlington Village hall.  Another old building is the traditional Jarrah Eucalypt weatherboard chapel of the Darlington United Church (below right)

Darlington has several churches, a group of retirement units, a government primary school and kindergarten, plus two private primary schools, a general store, a liquor and gourmet shop, post office, art gallery and tearoom , real estate agency, dentist, health practitioner, and hair salon. The route of the original railway, now gone, is a popular hiking and horse-riding trail which passes through the heart of the community.

The village centres around a sports oval on which cricket, football and T-ball are played, a skateboard facility and tennis courts.  The Darlington Hall accommodates a range of activities from art exhibitions to yoga.  It is also the centrepiece of an annual arts and crafts weekend, the Darlington Arts Festival, held on the first weekend in November which attracts many visitors from the city.

Darlington village is well served by an active Ratepayers and Residents Association which seeks to maintain the unique hills lifestyles and the amenities which have made so many people choose to live in Darlington.  A precinct Plan protects the character of the centre of the village and the DRRA encourages those buying land to maintain the qualities that surveys have indicated are valued by residents.

Darlington residents have an active social life and are members of many sporting and social groups.  The Darlington Volunteer Bushfire Brigade is a particularly valued community group.  For further information see Community Groups.
